Taking vitamin D2 might lower the body’s levels of vitamin D3 – the more efficient form of the nutrient – according to new research.

While both forms of vitamin D are available as supplements and widely used, this research confirmed that vitamin D3 – produced naturally in the body from sunlight – is more effective. Published in the Nutrition Reviews journal, the study reviewed data from randomized controlled trials and, surprisingly, showed that vitamin D2 supplementation consistently lowered concentrations of vitamin D3. In some cases, D3 levels even fell below those of the control groups.

Experts have stressed the public health importance of this finding, especially given the fact that vitamin D deficiency is widespread worldwide. They argue that choosing the most effective vitamin D supplement should be a priority in both personal health decisions and national nutrition strategies.
