A 16-week study, conducted in Madrid and published in the JAMA Dermatology journal, this trial involved 38 adults with mild to moderate psoriasis. Nearly half of the participants who followed the Mediterranean diet achieved at least a 75 percent reduction in disease severity, while no improvements of this scale were seen in the control group.

The Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, nuts, and fish, is known for its anti-inflammatory and cardiometabolic benefits. Researchers believe these properties play a direct role in calming the overactive immune responses that drive psoriasis. By reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, the diet may help slow the abnormal skin cell turnover triggered by misdirected T-cells, leading to fewer flare-ups and visible patches. Participants who adhered most closely to the eating plan not only experienced clearer skin but also reported improved sleep, reduced anxiety, and a better overall quality of life.

This trial marks the first randomized clinical evidence linking the Mediterranean diet to improved psoriasis outcomes, strengthening earlier observational findings that had hinted at a connection.
