This large international clinical trial enrolled 1,228 dialysis patients across 26 sites in Australia and Canada. The results were presented at the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week 2025 and published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Participants who received four grams per day of fish oil, providing the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, experienced a 43 percent reduction in major cardiovascular events compared with those given a placebo. These events included heart attack, stroke, cardiac death, and vascular-related amputations.

According to lead Australian investigator Adjunct Professor Kevan Polkinghorne, this represents a notable breakthrough in a population with extremely high cardiovascular risk, where previous interventions have often failed to show benefit. He added that dialysis patients typically have much lower blood levels of EPA and DHA than the general population, which may help explain the pronounced effect observed.
