In this study, scientists confirm that COVID-19 mRNA vaccines can trigger inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) or its surrounding lining (pericarditis), with young men most affected. UK data cited in the report suggest more than 2,000 post-vaccination cases, the majority linked to COVID-19 mRNA vaccines produced by companies such as Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. The condition appears to arise when the immune system reacts aggressively to the vaccine’s foreign RNA, producing inflammatory signals that can damage cardiac cells.

The researchers found that, in susceptible individuals, mRNA vaccination can provoke a surge of cytokines – immune signalling proteins that are essential for fighting infection but potentially harmful in excess. Blood samples from patients who developed myocarditis showed elevated levels of two such signalling proteins that appear to work together to overstimulate the immune response and injure heart tissue.

Symptoms typically emerge within one to three days of COVID-19 vaccination and may include chest pain, shortness of breath, fever, and heart palpitations. While many cases resolve quickly, some require hospitalisation and, in rare instances, can be fatal. The researchers caution that similar effects could also potentially occur with other types of mRNA-based vaccines.

To read how an analysis published in 2022 found that the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA injections are more likely to cause serious adverse events than they are to prevent hospitalization from COVID-19, see this article on our website.
