Carried out by researchers from China, this study looked at whether vitamin K2 supplements can help improve bone health in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. The researchers combined results from nine clinical trials involving 2,570 participants aged between 60 and 77 years old. Instead of focusing on fractures or bone scans, the study looked at blood markers that show how actively bone is being built up or broken down. Vitamin K2 is particularly important in this respect because it helps “switch on” a bone protein called osteocalcin, which allows calcium to bind properly into bone.

The analysis found that vitamin K2 consistently improved markers linked to bone building. Women taking K2 had higher levels of active osteocalcin and other indicators of bone formation, while levels of inactive osteocalcin dropped sharply. This suggests that vitamin K2 helps the body use calcium more effectively when forming bone. Based on their findings, the researchers concluded that vitamin K2 supplementation significantly improves vitamin K status in osteoporotic patients and that the study supports the potential role of the nutrient in improving bone metabolism.
