Globally, research shows that rates of hypertension among young people have nearly doubled over the past 20 years. At present, however, British children are not routinely screened for high blood pressure, leaving clinicians uncertain about how widespread the problem is and which teenagers are most at risk. Researchers argue that identifying hypertension early could allow doctors to intervene and reduce the likelihood of organ damage, strokes, and heart attacks developing in early adulthood.

High blood pressure in childhood is increasingly believed to be driven by lifestyle factors such as obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity, and excessive screen time, rather than underlying medical conditions alone. The problem can silently damage blood vessels, the heart, and kidneys for years before symptoms eventually appear. Researchers warn this trend could place a major future burden on the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and economy, with rising numbers of people suffering cardiovascular disease during their working lives.

Proposals for countering the problem include incorporating blood pressure checks into existing school health programs, introducing a dedicated NHS adolescent health check, or targeting children at higher risk due to family history, premature birth, or excess weight.
