High Polyphenol Intake Linked to Better Heart Health

Consuming high levels of polyphenol-rich foods over an extended period may support healthy blood pressure and cholesterol profiles, thereby lowering the risk of heart disease, according to new research published in the journal BMC Medicine.

Polyphenols are biologically active natural substances that are found exclusively in plants. Also known as phytobiologicals, research shows they play important roles in limiting the effects of cellular aging. The health protective effects of  substances such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG, an extract from green tea), quercetin, resveratrol, curcumin, and cruciferous vegetable extracts have been the subject of intensive research and numerous scientific studies.

In this latest study, UK researchers followed more than 3,000 adults for over a decade and found that people who regularly ate a diet rich in polyphenols had a lower risk of developing heart and blood vessel disease. Those with the highest intake showed better heart health scores, lower blood pressure, and healthier cholesterol levels. In a smaller group, the researchers also measured polyphenol breakdown products in urine. Higher levels of these markers were linked to higher so-called “good” HDL cholesterol, as well as to lower blood pressure and heart disease risk. Together, the results add to the growing evidence that regular consumption of polyphenols may help protect the heart over the long term.
