Researchers have found that ADHD is up to five times more prevalent in children with the highest levels of lead in their bodies. In the case of copper, the relationship was even stronger, with children with the highest levels being sixteen times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD.

Carried out by researchers in Catalonia, Spain, these two studies [1, 2] suggest that environmental pollutants can influence brain development during pregnancy and early childhood, potentially increasing vulnerability to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The team focused on how metals accumulate in brain regions involved in attention, memory, and self-control, such as the hippocampus and frontal cortex.

The studies examined 205 children aged 6 to 16, including 139 diagnosed with ADHD and 66 without neurodevelopmental disorders. All participants were assessed using international diagnostic standards and tested for cognitive abilities such as memory, reasoning, and processing speed. Urine samples were analyzed for levels of metals including lead, copper, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and antimony. The results showed that children with the highest lead levels were up to five times more likely to have ADHD, while those with high copper levels were up to sixteen times more likely. Smaller but significant links were also found for cadmium and antimony.

Further analysis found that excess copper and lead were associated with slower thinking speed and more severe symptoms such as inattention and impulsivity, while mercury exposure was linked to poorer concentration and inconsistent reactions. Children with ADHD also appeared more sensitive to these toxins than others.
