Published in the JAMA Network Open journal, this new analysis predicts a dramatic rise in the global cancer burden by the middle of the century. Drawing on data from 185 countries and territories, the researchers assess disparities across 36 cancer types.

In 2022, global cancer prevalence stood at 178.9 cases per 100,000 people, with an estimated 20 million new cases and 9.7 million deaths recorded that year. The most common cancers in 2022 were breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, and non-melanoma skin cancers. Lung cancer was the leading cancer, accounting for 12.4 percent of new cases. It was also the leading cause of cancer death, responsible for 18.7 percent of fatalities.

The study projects that lung cancer will remain the top incident cancer in 2050, making up 13.1 percent of new cases, and will continue to be the leading cause of cancer death, accounting for 19.2 percent of deaths. Significantly, the projected 35.3 million cancer cases in 2050 represent a 76.6 percent increase from 2022 levels.

Cancer deaths are forecast to rise even more sharply – by 89.7 percent – to 18.5 million annually. The steepest projected increases in incidence are for non-melanoma skin, bladder, mesothelioma, prostate, pancreatic, and stomach cancers, among others, while the largest projected rises in deaths are for prostate, bladder, non-melanoma skin, and mesothelioma.
