In this study, researchers in Peru examined 31 commonly used pesticides – none of which are currently classified as carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) – and combined environmental modelling with national cancer records. By mapping pesticide exposure at a very fine scale across the country and comparing it with over 158,000 cancer cases, the team identified 436 “hotspots” where higher exposure coincided with significantly increased cancer rates, in some cases up to ninefold.

A key innovation of the study was grouping cancers by their developmental tissue origin rather than by organ, revealing particularly strong links between pesticide exposure and cancers of the digestive system, lungs, and skin. In one regional hotspot, researchers found a distinct cluster of liver cancer cases among local populations. Analysis of liver tissue samples from affected patients uncovered a unique biological signature consistent with exposure to so-called non-genotoxic carcinogens – chemicals that promote cancer not by directly damaging DNA but by disrupting normal cellular function.

The study concluded that current regulatory frameworks – which focus on evaluating individual chemicals – may underestimate the dangers posed by real-world combinations of pesticides.
