Published in the Thorax journal, this study examined data from more than 1,100 children and over 1,000 adults with asthma. Vitamins A and D are known to influence genes involved in lung development and immune responses, and deficiencies in these vitamins have previously been linked to poorer asthma outcomes.

The results showed that vitamin A was particularly important for children with asthma. Children with higher vitamin A levels had significantly better measures of lung function, including their overall breathing capacity. In adults, higher levels of both vitamins A and D were linked to improved lung performance.

The researchers also discovered evidence that these benefits may be partly driven by epigenetic mechanisms – chemical changes that affect how genes are switched on and off without altering the DNA sequence itself. Adults with higher vitamin levels showed changes in the regulation of the immune-related IRF5 gene and in microRNAs linked to lung health and biological ageing.
