Published by researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University in Japan, this study identified a link between chronic fatigue and deficiencies in folate and vitamin B12. While fatigue is often blamed on lack of rest or overwork, the researchers suggested that poor nutrition may also play a key role. The study focused on homocysteine, an amino acid whose levels rise when folate and vitamin B12 are low.
The researchers measured blood levels of homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12 in around 600 healthy Japanese adults and assessed the participants’ fatigue and motivation using standard questionnaires. They found that individuals with higher homocysteine levels generally had lower concentrations of both folate and vitamin B12, regardless of sex. The analysis also accounted for other factors that can influence fatigue, including age, sleep duration, workload, and dietary habits.
When the results were examined separately for men and women, higher homocysteine levels were linked to greater physical fatigue in men and lower motivation in women. According to lead researcher Professor Hiroaki Kanouchi, this may be the first study to report a relationship between vitamin B12 and folate status and fatigue-related symptoms in otherwise healthy individuals. The findings suggest that maintaining adequate intake of these vitamins could help support energy levels and motivation, in addition to the established health benefits associated with lower homocysteine levels.
