In this secondary analysis of the COSMOS trial, researchers found that taking a low-dose daily multivitamin-mineral supplement may help older adults maintain their cardiovascular health and everyday functioning. The analysis included 16,027 people aged 60 and over who were followed for three years. Compared with those taking a placebo, people taking the supplement had small but significant improvements in symptoms linked to cardiovascular health and in their overall cardiovascular health scores. The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition.
The greatest benefits were seen in the 122 participants with carotid stenosis, a narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the brain and which can increase the risk of stroke. In this group, supplement use led to meaningful improvements in cardiovascular health and daily functioning. The researchers said that reducing symptoms such as tiredness, shortness of breath, and swelling could make everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, bathing and doing household chores easier, helping older people remain active and independent.
