From Darkness to Purpose: Mr. Kudzai’s Journey With the Movement of Life

Life has a way of breaking us and then rebuilding us into something stronger. For Mr. Kudzai, that rebuilding began during the hardest season of his life – after losing his wife. What followed was a spiral into drug addiction, a period he now describes as his “darkest chapter.” Today, however, Mr. Kudzai is drug-free, healthy, and leading a life of service through our Movement of Life project.

The loss of his wife left a deep void. Grief turned into desperation, and soon Kudzai found himself turning to drugs to numb the pain. For years, he struggled as his responsibilities piled up and addiction took control of his life. His mother and young son were still depending on him, but he felt increasingly lost and unable to cope. The turning point came when he realized he had a choice: continue down a path that was destroying him, or fight to become the father and son his family needed. “When I looked at my son and my mother, I saw that they still believed in me,” Kudzai says. “Thanks to Bruce Kanengoni, the coordinator of the Movement of Life in Zimbabwe, for introducing me to this wonderful project. That’s when I decided to change.”

The Movement of Life’s project in Zimbabwe focuses on food security, health, and community wellbeing under the theme of Free Food for All. The project works with schools and communities, helping them to grow fresh, nutritious food, with a particular focus on vitamin C-rich vegetables and fruits such as covo (African kale), mustard greens, tomatoes, peppers, oranges, and lemons.

But the Movement of Life gave Kudzai more than a sense of purpose. It gave him practical tools and skills. Through the project, he received gardening tools, seedlings, and training in how to grow and care for crops. With this support, he started his own garden.

Today, Kudzai’s garden is thriving. He focuses on growing vitamin C-rich produce because he understands the importance of good nutrition for health and immunity. The vegetables he grows do not just feed his own household. He sells some of his harvest, using the income to help support his mother and son, while also contributing produce to the community in keeping with the project’s Free Food for All mission. “It’s not easy,” he admits. “But waking up to water my garden and seeing things grow gives me peace. I’m no longer running from my problems. I’m building something. Many thanks to the Dr. Rath Health Foundation!”

Being drug-free has also helped Kudzai rebuild his relationships. He is now fully present for his mother, helping her with her daily needs, and for his son, whom he is raising with love and stability. He says the routine of gardening, the discipline it requires, and the sense of community he has found through the Movement of Life have helped him remain grounded and focused.

Kudzai’s story is about more than personal recovery. It shows what can happen when people are given a second chance, practical skills, and the support they need to make a fresh start. The Movement of Life project did not simply teach him how to plant crops. It helped him replant his own life – and inspired him to encourage others in the Warren Park community in Harare, where he lives, to do the same.

He now spends his days working in the garden supported by the Movement of Life at the Mereki community, sharing what he has learned with other community members and encouraging young men who may be facing struggles similar to those he once experienced.

From addiction to agriculture. From loss to leadership. Mr. Kudzai’s journey shows how purpose, practical skills, and community support can help someone rebuild their life. Through soil, seeds, and the support of the Movement of Life, he has found a new direction – and is now using his experience to help others avoid the path he once took.

As always, if you would like to help support our life-changing work in Zimbabwe, any donation you can make, no matter how small, will be very greatly appreciated.
