This study included 61 patients in Italy and found that plastic particles were present in 84 percent of those who had suffered a heart attack, compared with 40 percent of those with chronic coronary artery disease and 32 percent of those with normal coronary arteries. Polyethylene, a plastic widely used in packaging and consumer products, was the most commonly detected type.
The researchers also found a strong association between exposure to air pollution, smoking, and the presence of plastic particles in the blood. Patients exposed to higher long-term levels of fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) were more likely to have microplastics in their blood, while smokers were six times more likely to have them.
All patients who both smoked and were exposed to higher levels of air pollution had detectable plastic particles, compared with just 12.5 percent of those who neither smoked nor experienced higher pollution exposure. The researchers suggest that smoking and air pollution may make it easier for plastic particles to enter the bloodstream through the lungs.
The results add to growing evidence that plastic particles can enter the human body and may contribute to cardiovascular problems.
