This study found that people who regularly took vitamin C supplements had a substantially lower risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease in which the immune system damages the protective covering of nerves. Published in the journal Nutrients, the study analyzed health and genetic information from 486,908 adults in the UK Biobank who were free of neurological disease when they joined the study. Over an average follow-up of 13.5 years, 452 participants developed MS. After taking into account a wide range of factors that could influence the results, regular vitamin C supplementation was associated with a 49 percent lower risk of developing the disease.
The researchers also found that the apparent benefit of vitamin C differed according to people’s inherited susceptibility to MS. Among those with an average or high genetic risk, vitamin C supplementation was associated with a significantly lower risk of the disease. However, the association was not statistically significant among people with a low genetic risk. Vitamin C has antioxidant and immune-regulating properties, and previous experimental research has suggested that it may help reduce inflammation in the nervous system and support the repair of damaged nerve insulation.
