Around the world there is now <a href=\"https:\/\/gmowatch.com\/where-are-gmos-banned\/\">growing opposition<\/a> to genetically modified crops. In Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/europeangreencapital\/countriesruleoutgmos\/\">19 out of the 27 member state countries<\/a> of the European Union have voted to either partially or fully ban them. Russia has similarly imposed a\u00a0ban\u00a0on growing or producing food using genetically modified plants or animals.\u00a0Asian countries banning GMOs include Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Bhutan, and Saudi Arabia. In the\u00a0Americas they are banned in Belize, Peru, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Only 4 out of 47 countries in Africa (South Africa, Burkina Faso, Sudan, and Nigeria) have made it legal to plant them.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico is similarly one of a growing number of countries that are banning glyphosate, a toxic herbicide linked to cancer. In Europe,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dr-rath-foundation.org\/2019\/07\/austria-becomes-first-european-country-to-ban-glyphosate-weedkiller\/\">Austria banned it in 2019<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dr-rath-foundation.org\/2019\/09\/germany-to-ban-glyphosate-from-end-of-2023\/\">Germany plans to do so from the end of 2023<\/a>.\u00a0France has also brought in restrictions and, towards the goal of ending its use completely, is giving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-france-glyphosate-idUSKBN28H1SK\">financial aid to farmers<\/a> who agree to stop using it. By May 2019 a total of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablepulse.com\/2019\/05\/28\/glyphosate-herbicides-now-banned-or-restricted-in-17-countries-worldwide-sustainable-pulse-research\/#.X0UTQaLQjIU\">21 countries<\/a>\u00a0worldwide had either banned or restricted use of the chemical.<\/p>\n<p>Concern over the dangers of glyphosate escalated in March 2015 when a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iarc.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MonographVolume112-1.pdf\">monograph<\/a>\u00a0published by the World Health Organization\u2019s \u2018International Agency for Research on Cancer\u2019 (IARC) classified it as being \u201cprobably carcinogenic to humans.\u201d IARC specifically noted that its classification of the chemical had followed a \u201ccomprehensive review of the latest available scientific evidence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the IARC\u2019s warning, it recently emerged that Monsanto owner Bayer and industry lobbyist CropLife America have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dr-rath-foundation.org\/2021\/02\/monsanto-owner-bayer-and-us-officials-pressured-mexico-to-drop-glyphosate-ban\/\">working closely with US government officials<\/a> in an attempt to pressure Mexico into abandoning its ban on glyphosate. The pressure on Mexico is\u00a0similar to that exerted by Bayer and chemical industry lobbyists in 2019 when trying stop a glyphosate ban in Thailand.
