New Research: Alzheimer’s Patients’ Memory Test Scores Remain Stable When Taking Omega-3

There is increasing recognition of the beneficial role omega-3 fatty acids can play in the prevention and control of Alzheimer’s disease. A study published by UK researchers in 2015 found that patients with high levels of these micronutrients are able to prevent brain shrinkage – a hallmark of Alzheimer’s – when they additionally take supplements of B vitamins. The finding points to a synergy between omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.

The study’s lead researcher, Professor David Smith from the University of Oxford in the UK, has described this finding as “very exciting and important,” explaining that “something so simple as keeping your omega-3 levels high and supplementing B vitamins if you are at risk could dramatically reduce a person’s risk.” Smith believes that patients showing early signs of dementia should immediately be given omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid, and that this approach should now be adopted by the UK’s National Health Service.
