While we have been told that the COVID-19 outbreak began in December 2019, evidence suggests that the SARS-CoV-2 virus may already have been in circulation months earlier than this.
Firstly, for reasons that remain unexplained, the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China – the laboratory site where the virus is alleged to have been developed – mysteriously took its main public virus database offline in September 2019.
Athletes attending the 2019 Military World Games in Wuhan in late October 2019 subsequently reported that they came down with Covid-like illnesses either while they were in Wuhan or shortly after returning home. Streets in Wuhan were said to have essentially been in lockdown during the games.
Three researchers from the Wuhan laboratory reportedly then sought hospital treatment for viral disease symptoms in November 2019.
But the virus may have been in existence even earlier than this. Its apparent presence in a Barcelona wastewater sample from March 2019, nine months before the pandemic is believed to have started, is particularly thought-provoking.
Even more intriguingly, genetic material owned by US vaccine maker Moderna – that was patented three years before the pandemic began – has reportedly been found in the coronavirus’ spike protein.
