The announcement that Pfizer plans to ask US regulators to authorize a booster dose of its experimental Covid-19 vaccine comes within months of the company announcing it already made $3.5 billion in revenue from the shots during the first three months of this year. It now expects total sales of the vaccine to reach $26 billion this year – an amount that exceeds the GDPs of more than half of the world’s countries.

But in a clear sign that Pfizer cannot guarantee the safety of the vaccine, it is demanding that countries buying it grant the company immunity from liability over side effects and deaths. When negotiating with Latin American governments it has reportedly even asked some of them to put up sovereign assets such as military bases as a guarantee against the cost of any future legal cases.
