The Biden administration’s expected recommendation that all Americans should receive COVID-19 booster shots follows lobbying conducted by vaccine manufacturer Pfizer. The booster program will reportedly begin in September after the US Food and Drug Administration grants full approval to Pfizer’s vaccine. Until now, regulatory approval for COVID-19 vaccines has only been achieved through the granting of so-called ‘emergency use authorizations’, which enable manufacturers to bypass the need for full clinical trials to be conducted.
Meantime, having already made $3.5 billion in revenue from its COVID-19 vaccine during the first three months of this year, Pfizer now expects total 2021 sales from the shots to reach $33.5 billion. This would make it one of the biggest-selling drug company products of all time. Moreover, with its CEO saying the public should expect to receive annual COVID-19 vaccinations in future, current estimates suggest that over the next five years Pfizer will rake in as much as $100 billion from the shots, thus making it one of the largest corporate beneficiaries of the pandemic.
