Petition To U.S. FDA Seeks To Make High Dose Vitamin B6 A Drug

News

A micronutrient that is necessary for the proper functioning of over 60 enzymes in the body, vitamin B6 is an important cofactor for the metabolism of amino acids and proteins in cardiovascular and other cells. Playing a key role in the production of red blood cells, which are the carriers of oxygen to all the cells of the body, it is also essential for the optimum structure and function of collagen fibers.

Bearing in mind the importance of ensuring an optimum intake of vitamin B6, it should be noted however that the ‘citizen’ petition referred to in this news story is not quite what it seems. It was filed by Emery Pharma, a California-based firm whose list of collaborators includes a number of pharmaceutical companies. The drug industry has a vested interest in reducing competition from non-patentable natural alternatives to its products. It is in all of our interests to ensure that Emery Pharma’s petition doesn’t succeed.
