The latest poll was taken between 27-28 January and found that 54 percent of Canadians now want COVID restrictions to be lifted in their country. The previous poll, taken two weeks earlier, had seen just 39 percent wanting them lifted.
There seems little doubt that the growing calls for an end to restrictions in Canada are a result of increasing support for the country’s truckers. In a campaign that has become known as the ‘Freedom Convoy’, hundreds of vehicles recently drove to the country’s capital, Ottawa, where, supported by thousands of protestors on foot, they proceeded to blockade the city and are demanding an end to COVID vaccine mandates. The truckers say they plan to remain until the mandates are lifted and that they are in it for the ‘long haul’.
In addition to misreporting by the mainstream media, attempts to undermine the Canadian truckers have included Facebook deleting their campaign page and GoFundMe refusing to hand over millions of dollars of funding raised for them. But in a sign that grassroots ‘people power’ is spreading worldwide, similar conveys have sprung up in further countries in recent days, including in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. It seems increasingly likely that truckers in these countries will soon be joined by others worldwide.
