Prescriptions For Fruit And Vegetables Slash Heart Attack And Stroke Risk


Prescribing people £50 ($63) worth of fruit and vegetables per month could cut their risk of heart attacks and strokes, research suggests. Scientists have discovered adults at risk of heart disease who received prescriptions for free produce ate more fruit and vegetables and had lower blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index (BMI).

Eating a vitamin-rich diet is essential for maintaining health and preventing disease. However, studies show that obtaining optimum amounts of nutrients from diet alone is no longer as easy as it once was.

Research conducted in the UK recently compared the levels of nutrients in 28 types of fruit and vegetables sold in 1940, 1991, and 2019. It found that levels of iron, magnesium, copper, potassium, calcium, and other nutrients were significantly depleted. The suspected causes include the increasing shift to industrial forms of agriculture.

The UK findings are consistent with previous research carried out in other countries including the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, and Finland. In some of these countries the levels of nutrients were found to have fallen dramatically.
