The irony here is that United States government departments and agencies increasingly now accept the likelihood that COVID-19 was caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus leaking from a research laboratory. The country’s energy department and the director of its Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) have both separately reached this conclusion, for example. This clearly represents a major turnaround for a scientific hypothesis that was once effectively banned from being shared on social media.

Of all the people to conclude early on in the pandemic that the virus had been created in a laboratory, arguably the most prominent was Professor Luc Montagnier, the French scientist who shared the 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of HIV. Interviewed on the CNews channel in France in April 2020, Montagnier asserted that the coronavirus had been designed by molecular biologists. Stating that it contains genetic elements of HIV, he insisted its characteristics could not have arisen naturally.

Since then, other prominent global figures from the fields of intelligence and health have added their voices to those who believe the virus was created in a laboratory. Notable examples include Richard Dearlove, a former head of MI6, the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, who says he has seen an “important” scientific report suggesting the coronavirus was created by Chinese scientists and that it escaped from a laboratory, and Dr. Robert Redfield, the former director of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
