Ensuring proper nutritional intake during pregnancy is vital for the health of both the mother and her developing child. In fact, research shows that a mother’s nutritional status at the onset of pregnancy has an important influence on the growth and development of her baby. This demonstrates the importance of ensuring a proper intake of all the necessary vitamins, minerals, and other micronutrients even before a woman becomes pregnant.
Recent research has shown that taking prenatal vitamins early in pregnancy is associated with the baby having a lower risk of autism. With around 1 in 54 children in the United States now affected by autism spectrum disorder, this is clearly an important finding.
Other research has shown that taking fish oil and probiotic supplements during pregnancy may reduce the risk of the baby suffering from childhood allergies. It has also been found that babies born to mothers with higher levels of vitamin D may have a higher IQ.
But it isn’t just the developing child that benefits from proper nutrition during pregnancy. Research has shown that women with higher vitamin C consumption are less likely to develop gestational diabetes. Similarly, supplementing with vitamin D may reduce the mother’s risk of developing preeclampsia and other pregnancy complications. Higher levels of the mineral manganese in early pregnancy are also linked to a lower risk of preeclampsia.
