Mirroring similar findings in other countries, the Center for Social Justice report cited in this news story found that pandemic lockdowns exacerbated existing inequalities in the UK and worsened problems such as family fragility, stagnant wages, poor housing, chronic ill health, and crime.

Other negative consequences of lockdowns highlighted in the report include a 700 percent increase in calls to a domestic abuse helpline, a rise in mental health problems among young people, a significant increase in severe school absence, and a surge in people seeking help for addictions.

Commenting on the findings, Andy Cook, the Center for Social Justice chief executive, said they make for “deeply uncomfortable reading.”
