Pfizer Sues Hungary as Pandemic Court Cases Mount

News

A court document obtained by POLITICO shows that Pfizer, together with its partner BioNTech, opened legal proceedings against the Hungarian government in January this year over COVID-19 vaccine deliveries.

These legal proceedings were launched after Hungary notified Pfizer of its intention not to pay for 3 million COVID-19 vaccine doses, valued at approximately €60 million ($64.7 million). A judge has rejected Pfizer’s request for a fast-tracked judgment, and discussions between the company and the Hungarian government are ongoing. The case mirrors a similar one brought against Poland, in which Pfizer is suing the country for refusing to accept and pay for 60 million vaccine doses.

The lawsuits against Hungary and Poland reflect a growing number of legal challenges related to the European Union’s pandemic-era vaccine procurement. Other notable examples include a criminal case brought against European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, a lawsuit launched by the New York Times accusing the European Commission of withholding text messages, and an investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office into vaccine procurement.
