The internal protocols released by Germany’s Robert Koch Institute, a federal government agency responsible for disease control and prevention, confirm what many people had already suspected regarding its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Revealing that officials, including the country’s health minister Karl Lauterbach, had overstated the risk to the public and manipulated data under political pressure, the protocols show that statistics promoted to the German public were sometimes highly inaccurate.
But Germany is hardly alone in having misled people during the pandemic. This is particularly the case regarding mortality statistics, where in many countries the deaths of people who had simply tested positive for the coronavirus were conflated with those directly caused by it.
